OpenOffice

Print
There is an alternative to paying Microsoft anywhere between £83 (Student Edition) and £318 (Professional) [prices from Misco - for a copy of their Office Productivity Suite in the shape of OpenOffice.

This open source product is available as a free download for Windows, Mac, Linux and Solaris operating systems.

Whilst it might not have all the collaborative working option of Office 2003, most users really only use the very basic functionality that was available in Office 97

Although the early versions of OpenOffice were quite primitive, the 2.0 series does address that and short of a row height within table difference to Word, manages to make a good job of rendering even the most baroque files.

With the ability to create PDF's from any of its applications, it offers you options that are only mooted for the next release of Office
